Why Business Development Training Belongs in Medical School

When we think of medical school, we picture intense study, clinical rotations, and the pressure of saving lives—not spreadsheets and strategy sessions. And yet, as many newly minted doctors discover, clinical excellence alone doesn’t guarantee a successful or sustainable career. One glaring gap in medical education is the absence of business development training—a skillset that’s crucial, especially for physicians working in private practice or leading healthcare teams.

Doctors often graduate with an impressive understanding of anatomy and pharmacology, but little to no knowledge of budgeting, team leadership, or business growth. For those stepping into practice ownership or administrative roles, this becomes a costly oversight. Without a solid foundation in how to run a practice, optimize operations, or lead a team effectively, many physicians find themselves overwhelmed by the “business side” of medicine. This can lead to poor decisionmaking, high staff turnover, reduced profitability, and ultimately, burnout.

The lack of business acumen also limits productivity and innovation. Doctors with business training are better equipped to streamline systems, adopt technology, and make datadriven decisions. They’re not just great clinicians—they become effective leaders who can expand access, improve patient outcomes, and build thriving healthcare ecosystems.

If we want doctors to succeed beyond the clinic, we need to rethink medical education. Integrating business development training—basic finance, leadership, strategic planning—would empower future physicians to take control of their careers and build practices that are both impactful and resilient.

After all, medicine is both a calling and a business. It’s time the curriculum caught up.
